Welcome to the Audible, presented by Trader Joe.

0:23.6

I'm Stuart Mandel, joined as always by Bruce Feldman.

0:26.9

And Bruce, there are some signs that the season is not that far away anymore.

0:33.1

We're seeing some kickoff times get announced.

0:36.7

And Vegas win totals are coming out, and we're going to play

0:39.1

a little game in a few minutes where we go through some of those win totals and what we think

0:44.0

about them. But first, your weekly somebody talks about NIL updates.

0:50.6

Yeah. Okay, so let's get into this, into it. Our friend Ross Dellinger, who does a terrific job at SI.com, had a sit down with Lane Kiffin from Old Miss,

1:03.0

and Lane Kiffin, who is almost always outspoken, and comes across on the NIL issue,

1:10.5

and the NIL issue collectives and all sorts of other things, I think very reasonable, probably more so, he's more open to just kind of speak his mind than most coaches are. A lot of times coaches get tangled up in this issue. A lot of times even ADs, remember we had Bubba Cunningham on, I don't know how long ago it was, probably a year ago. And kind of like, do you remember that? No, that was, it was more than a year ago. It was before NIL. It was probably two years ago. And it was, I remember you and I got off the interview and looked at each other, like, does he not realize that ship has sailed? He was playing

the whole like amateurism and anyway. Yeah, Lane, the way I would put it is he's a realist.

1:53.1

And so where you see all these coaches like Jimbo and Sabin, we got to do something about this.

2:00.3

Everything's out of control. Is this really what we want college football to be?

2:04.2

And Lane has just accepted that this is what college football is going to be, and you either adapt or you don't.

2:09.6

We're professional sport, he says, and they are professional players. I've said from the beginning, players should get paid.

2:15.9

They do the work. Why that should be limited to a scholarship check, I disagree with.

2:20.6

And they shouldn't be paid all equal.

2:22.1

That's not what happens in the real world.

2:23.6

Why does their best player get paid the same as the worst player?

2:25.9

That's not real life.

2:28.2

Now, he talks about, you're trying to do this with no salary cap and unrestricted free agency and so on and so forth. But he's saying it's basically the equivalent. If you're complaining about this here, I have to, um, a lot of people will sit back and say, oh, it'll go away, NTA will fix it. Okay, go ahead and wait. As a coach in AD, you won't be there. There'll be a new coach in AD. It's here. Unlike others, how long is it here? How are they going to fix it? I don't care. It's here. I have to present to boosters to say, hey, this is what needs to be done. Resistance to it would be like still huddling and using an I formation offense. People try to avoid it. We're not doing that crap. Almost all those people are out of jobs.

3:08.6

It's kind of the adapt and die motto or die motto.
