Many Lakers fans didn't think it would happen, many didn't want it to happen, but on Monday the announcement was made: There will be a banner raised at the Crypt to commemorate the team's championship in the NBA's first In-Season Tournament. It won't look like the other title banners. Different shape, different color, and unlike other title banners the Lakers will add to it with future IST wins. (Think of how high schools often commemorate state titles.) The reaction, at least on social media, was pretty swift and intense. Lakers fans seemed unhappy, and other fans seemed more than ready to make fun of the idea of an IST banner. But the NBA made it clear something would go up, part of legitimizing what the league hopes will become a meaningful event year over year. And the Lakers are being good citizens. It'll go up on December 18th, and most likely fans will forget it's there 10 minutes later. Meanwhile, the 18th could be significant for other reasons. The Lakers, reports Shams Charania of The Athletic, could have guard Gabe Vincent back in the lineup that night, which is earlier than many expected, given how little we've heard about his recovery over the last few weeks. What will his role be when he's finally back? How does Vincent fit into the rotation? Who might lose some minutes? Finally, D'Angelo Russell spent a lot of time on Saturday talking trash with Indiana's Bruce Brown. It's an indication of how much last year's Western Conference Finals hurt him on a personal level.
