Welcome to pushback. I'm Mary Matte. Jeremy Corbyn's tenure as Labor Party leader recently

came to an end. Corbin, a staunch progressive and lifelong activist, stepped down just months

after Labor's crushing defeat in the December 2019 U.K. elections. But now new details are emerging on how Corbyn was sabotaged from the inside.

A Labor Party investigation found that top labor officials actually tried to lose the 2017 general election

in the hopes such a loss could lead to Corbyn's ouster.

This faction set up a secret working group that diverted money into right-wing labor

candidates instead of Corbyn's allies.

Their sabotage efforts failed at the time.

With Corbin at the helm, Labor overturned the conservative majority, posted the largest popular vote gain since

1945, and came just a few thousand votes shy of winning that 2017 general election.

As labor supporters celebrated their gains on the night of that vote, the anti-corban

officials inside labor, sulked. One official wrote, quote,

They are cheering and we are silent and gray-faced, opposite to what I had been working towards

for the last couple of years. Unquote. Overall, the report concludes that a, quote, abnormal

intensity of factional opposition to the party leader, Corbin,

had inhibited the proper functioning of the Labor Party bureaucracy. The report also suggests

that the same people who tried to undermine Corbyn were themselves the ones who were slow to respond

to allegations of anti-Semitism within the

Labor Party ranks.

The so-called anti-Semitism crisis inside labor was used as another weapon to undermine

Corbyn's leadership.
