Extension is the nothing personal word of the day for Tuesday, January 10, 2023.

Not like an extension cord. Not like I'm giving you an extension on your rent payments.

On your credit card. An extension is when you have an employee under contract. And you

extend their contract. Often prematurely. Extending a contract that has run out. That's

a new contract. I always viewed it very simply. If we have a player who has any number of

years of control left with us. And we sign him to a contract that locks him in for any

number of years where we wouldn't otherwise have him. That's an extension. If you have

a player signed to a three year deal. And at the end of year three you sign him to another

three year deal. That's not an extension. They've resigned him. If he's in year two of

the three year deal. And you sign him for an additional three years. That's a contract

extension. The thing about contract extensions is that more often than not you're going to

get screwed. And the reason you're going to get screwed is that you sign players to extensions

or coaches or GMs or presidents. You do it when you are a rationally exuberant about
