Summary

Eric Richins told people close to him after Valentine's Day 2022 that he believed Kouri might be poisoning him. He'd been violently ill. A month later, he was dead.

This is Part 2 of The Perfect Wife — for anyone who's ever caught something wrong and couldn't get anyone to act.

Bobby Curley knew. In September 1991, he grabbed a nurse's arm and said the words out loud:

"Please help me. My wife is trying to kill me. She is not as she seems."

He died twelve hours later.

Joann had been poisoning his iced tea for almost a year. Thallium — odorless, tasteless. His hair fell out. His hands and feet burned. Doctors couldn't explain it.

Once Bobby was hospitalized, away from home, he started to improve. Then Joann visited. She brought pizza. She brought iced tea in a thermos.

That night, Bobby told the nurse. The next morning, his heart stopped.

Hair analysis proved he'd been poisoned over eleven months. Nine hundred times the lethal dose. Two days before he died, Joann won $1.7 million in a settlement.

She needed him dead before he could spend it.

After Valentine's Day of 2022, Eric Richens told friends something that sticks with me.

0:17.0

He'd been violently ill, the kind of sick that puts you on the bathroom floor, that empties you out completely.

0:23.0

That makes you wonder if you should go to the hospital or just hope the sweet veil of death slowly falls over you.

0:33.7

You know, like when you're just so ill, so much in pain, so sick on the bathroom,

0:38.5

like just that feeling, God, it came out of nowhere. And I hit him like a freight train.

0:47.5

And afterward, once he could stand up again, once the worst had passed, he said something to people close to him.

0:56.8

He said it, half laughing.

1:00.1

The way you say things that are too dark to take seriously or too dark to process because it's just like, there's no way.

1:11.8

Or is there?

1:15.0

I think Corey might be poisoning me.

1:16.1

A joke.

1:17.2

Kind of.

1:21.0

The kind of joke that isn't really a joke,

1:24.4

the kind that comes from a place you don't want to visit.

1:30.8

I thought you can't fully form a suspicion. You have to wrap in humor because saying it straight would mean you actually believe it. A month later, Eric Richens was dead.

1:40.0

And I keep coming back to that moment, not the death, the joke.

1:45.7

The fraction of a second where Eric's brain connected dots, he didn't want to connect.

1:51.4

When something in him, instinct, observation, pattern recognition, whatever you want to call it, sent up a signal.

2:00.5

Something is wrong here. Something is wrong here.

2:01.8

Something is wrong with her.

2:05.4

And he laughed it off because what else do you do?
