editor and publisher of Defense and Foreign Affairs. He's in Perth, Australia.

Australia is part of the

Commonwealth. The King of Australia, the monarch King Charles III, has left the

London Clinic waving and smiling to the people who were out on the street to greet

him, he was with the Queen.

At the same time, the Princess of Wales departed the same clinic earlier after her surgery. This is a royal family that is not in

any fashion behind screens or behind closed doors, very much living in the public eye,

pretty much like a president would or the leader of any significant power.

Gregory, what do we learn from the way Charles handles this?

I'm watching him now repeatedly in a loop, smiling and waving as he walks out with the

Queen, making sure everybody sees him and that he's moving on his own. How do you

measure Charles because this is the first time I've ever played such close attention to a monarch?

Well he is demonstrating that he has courage and resilience because the operation which he recently endured is not a simple one.

There'll be months and months of recovery involved.

They're saying that he'll take the best part of a month off work, whatever that means, because he's a workaholic,

and I don't believe he'll take that month off, maybe from public engagement, but he'll still be actively engaged.

But he has demonstrated that there is verility in the throne and in

the leadership of the United Kingdom at a time when at a parliamentary level the executive government of the country under the

Prime Minister is weak, vacillating, unpopular and getting ready for a polarizing election.

So to have the monarch showing this kind of strength and confidence
