Summary

Today, I’m joined by the brilliant Dr. Steven Veerapen to unravel how the fear and condemnation of witchcraft evolved from the reign of Henry VIII to that of King James. Trust me—this isn’t your typical dry history lecture. Steven brings it to life in a way that’s both eye-opening and fascinating. If you’re thinking “ugh, witch trials—boring,” think again. You won’t want to miss this one!

But to get started, I would really love to talk about witchcraft during the reign of Henry the 8th.

1:25.2

Was there anything going on during the reign of Henry the 8th when it came

to witchcraft? Because I feel like I'd never hear anything about it. Yeah, there were no great

witch panics or anything like that. When we think of witchcraft panics and mass trials and everything,

we kind of think of the Puritans. We think of Salem. We think of the outbreaks under King James.

1:46.5

We don't really think of Henry. And it seems to be that Henry didn't have a huge interest in

witches and witchcraft. The whole idea of witches and witchcraft went back hundreds of years.

those things that people accepted, or at least the majority accepted as existing, but there was

some kind of debate, particularly academic debate, about how serious it was, how much people

that were thought of as being witches which is, were just deluding
