Summary

Alfred is one of the greatest heroes of the Christian West. Once exiled, he regained a foothold on the island and drove out the Danes, who had ruthlessly overwhelmed the countryside. He led reforms in education, government, and monetary policy. He also developed the idea of Christian burroughs.
