So, yes, I left university. I moved to Argentina, setting out on a kind of career of trying to be a foreign correspondent. And, you know, in my mind, being a foreign correspondent really

meant, you know, you're setting out, you're a young man, you want adventure, right?

And part of being a foreign correspondent in my mind always did mean covering wars.

I never wanted to be the war reporter who goes from war to war to war, and I still don't

really like that. But being a foreign correspondent was you were out in these exotic locations and at times you were covering wars.

So I was in Argentina and at the top of that continent was Colombia.

Colombia was in this brutal civil war that was pitting this Marxist rebellion against a far right death squads and this government.

And it was this three-way and it was the center of the cocaine trade.
