On a hot summer night in late August 2015, Brenda Delgado stood in her kitchen. She grasped the

counter to keep her knees from buckling underneath her. She'd just received a heartbreaking text

message from her ex-boyfriend, the love of her life, Ricky Paniagua. He said he was moving

1700 miles away to California. Brenda understood that they weren't together at the moment,

but she'd always seen the split as temporary. If he left for California, how could she
