This week we have SGX coach Kevin Donahue and he's going to talk to us about what it takes to stay injury free.

0:06.5

Hey Spartans, this is Kevin Gilotti and welcome to the Spartan athlete.

0:11.0

You don't seem to have too many injuries. How do you race that much and stay pretty injury free?

0:18.0

I mean you may have your minor things here and there, but in scheme of things, I've never really seen you down for the count. How do you pull it off?

0:24.0

Yeah, I think one thing starts and I picked my parents well. I think genetics does have a lot to play with it.

0:29.0

And for me, it's been a true blessing because I just think having a shorter more muscular frame has really kept me from getting those like those weird knee injuries those weird back injuries because there's just not that much force put on my joints.

0:44.3

My joints are really big, very bony, and surrounded by a ton of muscle.

0:48.8

So for example, the taller athlete, if they step in a hole and their knee goes out to the side a little bit there's a lot more force put on that joint.

0:56.0

For me there's a lot less.

0:58.0

You've also done a lot with our Spartan SGS group.

1:01.0

If you were to tell the viewers out there, maybe a couple of your favorite

1:06.4

techniques, could you give anybody a little bit of advice because to some?

1:10.4

Yeah for sure.

1:11.4

I'd say that one of the things that's overlooked so much in our overhead

1:16.4

grip strength obstacles such as the monkey bars, the multi rig, the twister is that people forget about using their lower half and how important

1:26.6

using the lower half of your body is and generating momentum and swing to actually help raise

1:32.3

your hands up to the next ring, twister handle, or monkey bar by using

1:37.5

it lower body momentum.

1:39.2

So getting your lower body swinging a lot more like a clock on a

1:43.2

a pendulum on a clock is going to help generate force that can bring your

1:45.8

hands up to places that you need them to be.

1:47.8

Yeah.
