Summary

Host Brad Kearns starts from the beginning with a big picture presentation of the what, why, and how of the ketogenic diet. You’ll learn why its so important to health and longevity, including the benefits for disease protection, improved cognitive function, , reduced inflammation and oxidative stress (these represent the essence of disease and accelerated aging), and the rapid and efficient removal of excess body fat. Keto is the red-hot dietary trend of the day, but it’s important to understand how to do it correctly and avoid the very common backsliding and burnout that occurs from a rushed approach or ill-advised approach. Brad talks you through the multi-step process detailed in the Mark Sisson with Brad Kearns New York Times bestseller, The Keto Reset Diet. This show is deeply informative and illuminating, but always in plain talk so you can grasp the concepts with needing heavy prior knowledge. If you are thinking about keto, this show will give you the essential tools to succeed without the nonsense of the keto flu that some people describe as inevitable.

A one, two, three, four, 1, 2, 3, 4. Let's get into it. The introduction to the ketogenic diet.

0:41.8

Let's learn all about keto. It's taken the diet world by storm, promising all these incredible health, disease protection, and fat reduction benefits. Tremendous science is supporting that

0:49.2

the ketogenic diet is highly effective in all these areas. So we're not talking about crazy fat diet. We're actually

0:56.6

talking about a critical element of human evolution. When our ancestors went without food for

1:05.2

long periods of time, particularly without carbohydrates, nothing like today's highly excessive high carbohydrate diet.

1:13.6

Our ancestors were able to survive and actually thrive due to the ability to manufacture ketones in the liver to replace the fuel source of glucose that we have plenty of today because of the high carbohydrate diet,

1:28.4

but was extremely scarce throughout the history of evolution. So, ketones burn like glucose in the

1:35.9

body, particularly important for the brain because the brain is a huge energy demand organ.

1:41.5

It burns 20 to 25 percent of our daily calories and can rely only upon glucose

1:46.9

or the glucose-like substitute of ketones and a little bit of lactate. So today, because we

1:56.8

slam so many carbs, our brains are almost entirely reliant upon glucose. How do you know?

2:04.1

When you do so much as skip a single meal, you start to feel cranky, tired, famished for

2:11.5

quick energy carbohydrates, and these are all indications that you're locked into a pattern

2:16.7

of carbohydrate dependency,

2:18.6

which arguably is the single most disastrous health consequence of modern day living.

2:25.6

That our primary fuel source is dietary carbohydrates,

2:30.1

and we're reliant upon regular feedings to such an extent that we can't even skip a meal without falling apart.
