Summary

In recent years, the idea of merging 3D printing with print electronics has become an area of both interest and skepticism. It is feasible, or is it just a gimmick? As the CEO of nScrypt, Ken Church set out to prove that it's not only feasible, but applicable and relevant. In order to do this, the team at nScrypt is designing and manufacturing industrial printers that will be capable of producing the products we use everyday. But that's not all, they are also printing biological materials such as collagen and red blood cells. This will pave the way for the printing of more complex tissues and organs, and will relieve biologists of the technological burden of the printing process and the software that's behind it.

Most recently, nScrypt has began working with a new startup that's using pancreatic cells to create spheroids, a biologic drug that has already shown to lower blood sugar levels in mice from 600 to 120 when administered subcutaneously. Church discusses a variety of topics, including thermoplastics in 3D printing, the steps involved and the challenges to overcome in printing organs, and nScrypt's plan to have careful experiments conducted on the bioprinter in the international space station, which is set to launch February 2019.

My guest today is Ken Church.

0:32.0

He's the CEO of a company called N-script.

0:34.6

We have been talking about 3D bio printing and the website is the letter NSCR YPT.com.

0:42.0

Ken, how are you today?

0:43.6

Very good, thanks.

0:44.8

Yeah, yeah.

0:45.9

So tell me about Enscript, what's the premise of the company?

0:48.7

So the thrust is to make something very complex, much more simple than it is done right now.

0:56.1

And with the advent of 3D printing, which by the way is not all that new,

1:00.8

but is certainly matured and feels new because it is becoming more user-friendly, is becoming

1:07.8

more to the point where it is a productive tool to use and not just in something where you're making small digits, but true

1:16.3

3D parts can be made from that. General Electric is obviously one of those teams that have moved this thing to maturity and because of that is picking up a lot of

1:24.9

momentum and so we are trying to do things I guess just a little bit differently instead of

1:31.6

doing a single material, instead of even just doing structural

1:36.1

materials, we do a couple of other things. One, we've added some electronics to that. So inside

1:41.3

the 3D printing, you can do structural aspects. to that
