Summary

While this Japanese delicacy isn't the world's only icy dessert, it's certainly one of the most unique -- that iconic, delicate texture sets it apart. Kakigōri tastes like a treat fit for aristocrats and royalty, and that's no surprise: Back in the 11th century, that's exactly what Kakigōri was.

Welcome to the show Radiculous Historians. Thank you so much for tuning in. My name is Ben.

0:32.8

My name is Noel Ben. You ever had those rolled up ice cream things? I think they're kind of a rip off.

0:38.7

I don't really have a sweet tooth. I don't know if we've ever talked about this on air, but

0:44.2

it's a thing that haunts me. I know that I am socially obligated to eat cake, for instance,

0:51.0

when it's offered, but left to my own devices. I won't really go for desserts. I'm sweet enough,

0:56.6

I guess. Well, to me, the rolled up ice cream is a classic example of style over substance,

1:00.9

form over function. It's this thing where they do it, kind of like they do with the cold stone,

1:05.4

where they mush the stuff together on like what do they call it? An anti-grittle, an icy surface

1:11.2

of some sort, but with this one, they just dump it in liquid form and then roll it up with like a

1:16.1

paint scraper kind of thing, these little pinwheel things, and they're really hard to eat and I don't

1:21.5

understand the point of it. That's kind of like dip in dots. There's more focus on the form

1:26.6

rather than the function. Dip in dots I can hang with, but they do end up sticking together and

1:30.5

sort of becoming just a weird icy mass, so I'm not super into those either. My point is just that

1:35.3

they're all still ice cream, they're just in different shapes. 100%. Oh, speaking of 100%,

1:40.9

you know, who always gives 100% on ridiculous history, it's our pal, you know, I'm your love,

1:46.0

I'm super producer, Casey Pagrum. 110% at times. At times. I didn't think it was possible. I mean,

1:52.7

that's some real lebush right there. We're also joined, no, we didn't talk about this off-air,

1:59.2

but we're also joined by our pal Matt Frederick over here shaking his head saying, no, please don't

2:04.7

put me in. Matt is literally, since we're an audio podcast, literally not. He doesn't want to be

2:10.4

on the show today. He's not here because he wants to hear this episode. I think he's just trying to
