This is Handel on the Law. Marginal legal advice where I tell you you have absolutely no case, hopefully.

L.A. County pays a fortune in settlements every single year, and it's getting worse and worse.

There is a juvenile hall run by the county of L.A.

It's called Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall, and it's run by the Probation Department.

And it has been investigated over and over again, violation after violation, not only the way it's maintained.

I mean, rats and, you know, the food is horrible, but it's a cesspool of drug use, and it's just not a good place. And so the L.A. County, County of L.A. has agreed to pay $2.7 million to one teenager.

And you wonder, how does a teenager get $2.7 million when you've got a whole slew of violations?

Wouldn't everybody be able to sue?

Well, this one's a little bit different,

because he was beat senselessly at that juvenile hall. And video, and this is video of a

December 2023 beating, showed Jose Rivas Barillas, who was 16 years old, being pummeled by six other juveniles at the juvenile hall.

Probation officers standing by, they're looking at this.

So each kid attacked Rivas for a few seconds and then they returned to breakfast.

Two officers later identified as long-term probation officials were laughing and shaking hands and encouraging the brawl.
