Today's show, the one big takeaway from the first public hearing of the January 6th committee.

The investigation into January 6th can sometimes seem sprawling and complicated.

The story of that day is filled with weird groups, conspiracy-minded lawyers and French characters,

oathkeepers and proud boys, John Eastman and Sidney Powell,

Jacob Chansley, the Q&on Shaman, or Aaron Mostofsky, the caveman rioter.

But the big message from the first hearing of the January 6th committee

was that it's a lot simpler than all of that. It's really about one person.

Donald Trump.

Donald Trump.

Committee Chair Benny Thompson made the point within the first few minutes of his opening presentation.

He became with some history to put January 6th unique awfulness into perspective.

I'm from a part of the country where people justify the actions of slavery, the Ku Klux Klan, and lynching.

I'm reminded of that dark history, as I hear voices today, try and justify the actions of the insurrectionists on January 6th.

He quickly got to the main point.

January 6 was a, quote,

sprawling multi-step conspiracy aimed at overturning the presidential election.

It was also, quote, the culmination of an attempted coup in which the violence was no accident.

Don Trump was at the center of this conspiracy.
