How should Christians approach immigration, justice, and faith in today’s cultural climate? In this episode of the Voxology Podcast, Mike and Tim dive into "Joyful, Peaceful, and Gracious Noncompliance," exploring what scripture teaches about welcoming the stranger, showing compassion, and advocating for justice.
Drawing on the work of experts like Matthew Soerens and their own reflections, they tackle the complex intersections of cruciformity, faith and politics, and the role of the church in society. Through real-life stories, scripture analysis, and discussions on cultural challenges, they address the dehumanizing language often used in immigration debates, the tension between legality and justice, and the church's responsibility to embody the teachings of Jesus. What does it mean to love our neighbor, especially when they are vulnerable? How can the church navigate these issues with humility, courage, and hope?
Engage with thoughtful insights, critical questions, and a call to action to advocate for justice in peaceful, gracious ways. Feel free to email your questions, share your perspectives on social media, and join the conversation as we pursue faithfulness to Jesus in a complex world. Together, let’s reflect on how Christianity can shape a more just and compassionate society.

0:00.0 | Hey, everybody. Welcome to Voxology podcast. Mike and Tim here. |
0:15.2 | Today we're going to do something just a little different. We found out last night. We were recording this on a Friday. |
0:22.4 | Israel attacked Iran, our friend Susie's families from there, and we're like many praying |
0:31.3 | for peace and wisdom and cool heads to prevail. |
0:35.8 | But prior to that happening, Tim and I wanted to have a bit of a |
0:39.8 | conversation around immigration. And just to let you know up front, I want to make the case |
0:47.0 | for joyful, peaceful, and gracious noncompliance to the current administration's practices in enforcing immigration law and agitation for the changing of some of our policies. |
1:02.2 | And so I have to give a bunch of disclaimers first. |
1:07.4 | To critique this administration's immigration enforcement does not mean in any way, share, |
1:14.3 | perform that we are fans of the previous administration's lack of enforcement or policy. |
1:21.4 | I am not an immigration expert in any way, share, or form. |
1:25.8 | And to some degree, I'm going to be channeling the work |
1:28.9 | Matthew Sorens, who wrote a book called Welcomeing the Stranger, years ago that I read, |
1:34.2 | and then we did a World Relief event with him last week. It was very, very enlightening. We'll talk |
1:38.5 | more about that in a second. Also, I am trying to use either the own quotes, the people's own words in describing what is |
1:49.7 | happening as far as possible. And I'm trying to use credible news agencies, not just randos on |
1:56.0 | Twitter. So I'll be quoting from Reuters, the Associated Press, the Wall Street Journal, CNN, but that CNN article has since been backed up by others. |
2:07.9 | And so we're going to split into two parts. |
2:10.3 | The first part is just to sort of track Tim and I's visit to California, this World Relief event on the eve, as we're flying back the next day, all of a sudden, things blow up in California. |
2:24.7 | And so we just want to, we kind of want to name some things that are being said and what we perceive as the reality. |
2:41.0 | And then we want to look at the text, the relevant texts in the scriptures regarding immigration, because one of the first things people will say when you start quoting Old Testament as well. |
2:47.0 | I mean, come on, guys, this isn't a theocracy. |
