Summary

(Nahum 1:8-9) Ninevah, Take 2. This city shows us both God's mercy and God's judgment. We must choose which we want for our own lives and nation. Although Nahum’s name means “comfort”, that comfort is found in trusting God amid judgment: those who know Christ can find refuge even when God’s wrath falls on the wicked. Did you know that there are two books of the Bible that deal with Nineveh?

0:46.4

Now the first, of course, is famous. We've just said it recently, and that is the story of Jonah. But did you know two books later? There's a second book that deals with the same city

0:52.3

and deals with the same sins, and it's called Nahum.

0:56.9

Nahum was from Judah. His name is a shortened form of Nehemiah, and so it means comfort.

1:03.2

And what was Naham's comfort? His comfort was in knowing that in the end God always does right.

1:10.0

In the end, evil doers will be repaid.

1:14.0

Now, I said to you that Naham deals with Nineveh, and indeed it does, but it deals with

1:17.9

Nineveh, 100 years after Jonah preached. So now think about this. Get this fixed in your mind.

1:23.3

Jonah comes preaching. The people in Nineveh repent, they get right with God. The greatest revival

1:29.2

in history, arguably, was the salvation of an entire city. A nation turns to God from the top

down. It was an amazing thing. And yet, 100 years later, they're right back to the same sins.

1:42.6

They're even in worse shape. See, when you go back

1:45.0

to sin, it's always worse every time you go back to it. And so finally they get to a place

1:49.5

where there is no more hope. And the city of Nineveh fell in 612 BC. Neum chapter 1, verse 1 says,

1:57.6

The burden of Nineveh. The burden of Nineveh. You see, the truth of the matter is,

2:04.1

sin may be repented of, we can be restored to fellowship, but it is still serious business.

2:12.6

And if we take it lightly, if we treat it flippantly, if we think we can go back and forth,

2:17.1

back and forth, back and forth, back and
