Well, I think the most immediate answer is verse five.

The people who were born on the way in the wilderness had not been circumcised.

Why?

Because of verse six, that generation did not obey the way in the wilderness had not been circumcised. Why? Because of verse six,

that generation did not obey the voice of the Lord. So it's a further signal that that first generation was unfaithful.

Joshua 5 is that the news of Israel's miraculous entrance into their new homes has made the rounds.
