when they ran a study of people awarding hypothetical scholarships to recipients,

they would award them more consistently to people whose politics they agreed with,

even in the face of objective qualifications or GPA or whatever it was.

And apparently most people are fine with that.

That's right, because we are fine tuned to be sensitive to discrimination based on race,

gender, and other categories.

But we were never taught that discriminating based on politics with some horrible taboo,

political party has become a signifier, not just of what you believe in terms of policies,

but who you are, what your values are, what you think about abortion and war and everything else.

To have a good society, we have to have well-functioning institutions.

And a good, a liberal society, not liberal like it left, but the traditional notion of a liberal society

is one in which there is excellence in different institutions,

and then people can live lives that they want to live,

and there's support from these different institutions.

And now that we're so polarized, we don't trust the other side to run anything.
