a predator, the pursuit, arrest, and confession with my special guest, true crime filmmaker and author, John Barowski. Welcome to the program and thank you very much for this interview. John Barowski. Thank you for having me, Dan. Pleasure to meet you. Thank you very much. Thank you for joining us. Let's talk about the forward to this book, how you came to be the author of this book, but talk about your connection with Dahmer and your interest in serial killers, how you came to that as you explained in the forward of this book. Sure. So, whenever I was throwing up, I had to

2:58.7

know relatively little about serial killers. My background was always loving horror films. So, started off with the Universal horror films and then worked my way through slasher. And then when I was in high school, I decided, well, I'm interested in horror films and makeup effects. So, I started getting into special makeup effects. I reached out to Dick Smith who had did a makeup effects for the actress and the Godfather and many other classic films.

3:28.7

And then he had gotten me in touch with someone who was local near me in Chicago and that's how I started doing makeup effects. And then I had shot short films on 8mm, which at the time that's what it was before video. You shoot, you send your film in to be developed, you get it back. And so, I was actually using my makeup creations in these short films with my best friends. So, I think it was when I was probably either a senior in high school or just after my senior year of high school.

3:58.7

My best friend called me up and he said, you got to come over. So, I went over to his house and his father was a detective in Chicago when Dahmer was arrested. And I believe it was 91. So, that would have just been when I graduated high school. So, he said, you got to come over here and I went to his house and what my friend thought was a mask catalog was actually the Dahmer file, which he found in his father's study. And it contained Dahmer's brief confession. But it also contained photocopies of photos.

4:28.7

That Dahmer took of his victim's heads on the sink, the damn heated hands and body parts. And coming from a background of four films, when I had seen these, this was real horror.

4:39.7

It wasn't anything that was made up. So, I was shocked at these photos. The heads had the eyes open and the mouths open and just awful. And I couldn't get out of my head. So, when I went into college, I figured, well, from my first film tech two class, what better to do than a short film on the Dahmer?

4:58.6

Dahmer case, including some of his confession. So, that was interesting. And also, when I was in college, I had to do a paper on the history of Chicago. And I was looking through this one book. And I mentioned this castle of 8K homes that this guy had built a suit building in the 1800s and rented rooms or in the world's fair.
