I'm John Batchel with my good colleague, Colonel Jeff McCawson, CBS News, Dickinson College,

Diamond Sixth Leadership and Strategy. Jeff acquaints me with a document that is routine from the

Pentagon about mission, about the overall mission. However,

we have two instances that suggest that there's more metaphor here than is first visible.

For example, the airstrike against what we were told was drug smuggling off the coast of Venezuela,

along with the deployment of three Arlie Burke class destroyers,

at least, a submarine and a marine expeditionary unit with lots of air

off the coast of Venezuela.

At the same time, in the Pacific, Guam is the base for the U.S. Navy.

But right now, the Philippines are reinforcing their front line with missiles on Luzon and perhaps on Palawan Island,

and they've opened up a new base somewhere between the water of the North Philippines and Taiwan,

a base that now will have anti-ship missiles in it. In other words, we're hardening the Philippines in the event of war.

Jeff, all of these things describe not foreign affairs,

but very much domestic affairs.

The Philippines are critical to hold the line outside of the first island chain.
