Summary

Joey McIntyre is a real one. The youngest of nine kids, the youngest member of New Kids On The Block — forget Backstreet Boys, N*SYNC, all that, these guys were first — this Boston-born singer and actor is a creative powerhouse with a wry and quick wit.

He joins us on the couch to discuss his new Christmas movie ‘Jingle Bell Wedding’ (out on Roku), but of course we had to get into the NKOTB lore: the group’s near-organic formation, what it was like joining the group at 12, the emotional toll, his voice breaking, going solo (with some serious independent chutzpah), reuniting and woah, those New Kids cruises really sounded like a doozy (just google Joey McIntyre, naked cowboy).

We also talk about his friendship with Debbie Gibson and Robbie Williams, his latest solo album ‘Freedom,’ his 2017 Curb Your Enthusiasm-esque show ‘Return of the Mac,’ the live Christmas extravaganza he’s compering in LA called ‘Tinselcolor,’ and so much more. There’s laughter, there’s tears, don’t miss it.

Hi, beautiful human. I'm Zach. That's Sano. You're welcome to the studio, a legend of new kids on the blog. Say hello to Joey McInton. Thank you. Good to be here, guys. You are one of Boston's finest. Um... Yeah. Other than, you know, being a cop, you know, I know what you mean. No, I, I, uh, I'm proud to be from Boston. I don't really wear it on my sleeve, like, too much, but... No, just your hat. You're wearing on your hat. Just my hat. Shit. Damn. See, I told you I wasn't I don't have a lot of sleep, so I don't even know what I'm wearing right now.

1:14.7

You know, when you think Boston, I think a lot of people think sports, right?

1:19.6

Yeah.

1:19.8

You know, and I didn't know how big of a fan I was until my son was born. And like, he came out of the womb the womb like a rabid freaking Bruins fan, Patriots.

1:31.4

And of course he was born at this golden time, you know, in 2007 where we struggled through the 80s and 90s.

1:38.9

And that's part of the cynicism of being a Boston fan, you know, because we lost with so many years.

1:44.5

I mean, Celtics were good, but mostly the Red Sox were, it was a painful experience.

1:48.8

But he just won championship after another, this kid, you know.

1:53.3

But yeah, I'm, I'm, um, there's worse people from Boston than, than me.

1:58.8

I'm very deeply fascinated. Can you explain, like, let's, okay, we have, like, music stuff. We have a whole album. You're, like, into Christmas. We have a lot to get to. Yeah. But, like, can you explain to me where you're at and what you're doing as, like, I would assume, like, an 11-half-year-old, 12-year-old kid in Boston. And how, what is the pitch? What do they say to you? What is the pitch? And how do they even... I give you two words. Find you. This is the, this is what, this is the pitch. New edition. Mm-hmm. That's all they said. They were from our backyard, new edition, five guys.

2:37.1

They were the biggest group at the time.

2:40.1

I was into R&B and pop music.

2:44.1

I had seven older sisters, so you had to be funky and you had to be able to dance to it.

2:50.1

You're the youngest of nine, which is so...

2:51.8

Youngest of nine. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. I mean, I get it. Like, if you told me you were the youngest of nine, I'd be like, no way. You know? When it's your experience, you don't really think of it as abnormal. But, yeah, it's a lot of people in one house. But you grow up being the youngest.
