The following is a true story about a young girl who is a national hero in France.

Her name is Joan of Arc. Just a word of warning. This is quite a

sad story and there are some pretty fierce battle scenes.

But we thought it was worth telling the story.

She was born in France in a town called Domremy

almost 600 years ago in 1412.

Her childhood was rather normal for a child in those days.

Her dad, Jacques, was a simple farmer.

And her mother Isabel was a deeply religious woman who taught Joan all the wisdom of her faith. At that time there was a terrible war between England and France called the 100 year war.

Actually, even though it was called that, it lasted even longer than 100 years.

During this time, sometimes the French were winning and sometimes the English.

It was a terrible time for ordinary people just trying to get on with their lives.

At the time of Jones' childhood, the English were looking very strong,

and many people were leaving Joan's village in fear for their

lives. When Joan was 13 years old she began to have visions. She saw things that nobody else

could see. From these visions she understood that she had a purpose to lead the

French in the battle against the English Army.

Joan was just a peasant farm girl.

How is she going to get any army to defeat the English?

She needed to speak with the King of France, King Charles. A few years went by and Joan continued to have similar visions. She cut her hair
