Joan Phillips was a known beauty with an artful and cunning mind.

She was the only child born to a wealthy farmer, John Phillips, and his wife,

in Northamptonshire, around 1656. As she grew older, her beauty and the family's wealth

attracted the attention of many suitors, suitors that Joan wasn't really interested in.

One anecdote goes as follows, a Mr. Day, who was a distinguished

citizen of Bristol, was one of those suitors. And he made what everyone considered a, quote, fine proposal.

In fact, he made more than one proposal, but Joan wasn't interested in marrying him.

In fact, scandalous by the standards of the time, Joan wasn't really keen on married life at all.
