Summary

Jessi’s back! It’s been a minute since we last talked to her and about a year since she was in the public eye in a serious way. She had to take a break, the situation got cleared up, but she’s still clearly feeling the repercussions — and here, for the first time, she sets the record straight. Now she’s back with her new EP P.M.S., kicking off with her addictive new single ‘Newsflash’ with Jadakiss.

She’s as fiery, funny, and unconventional as ever, but for all her feistyness the 36-year-old is vulnerable too and she’s keen to show this side of herself, not only in music, but in conversation. We talk about her childhood in Jersey, getting bullied and her subsequent glow up. Moving to Korea to make outside of the idol system, and winding up on reality show Unpretty Rapstar! She also discusses working with PSY (and other different labels), trying to make space for love (we fill her in on the existence of Raya and her brain is blown), plus so much more!

Explain, does that manifest in a way of like you fighting the system? Because the truth is like. No, no. It's just I feel like ever since I was young I always I was so independent like always

Going up even when I was young. Like I had older brothers. I moved out here when I was like, moved to Korea when I was like 14. So I had to like kind of discipline myself like at a young age. So like, I don't know. I just, I had to like mature faster. So I just kind of like,

Like, I'm not as, I mean, it sounds weird when I say, people say, I'm going to see it. I just feel like a me. You got me? Totally. But you have many sides of you? It makes me feel weird when people think that. I just rather just be like an artist. Yeah. Was there a defining moment though where you were like, I need to take control of my career and I can't leave it up to anybody else? I mean, my whole life was like that, to be honest. To be fair, like shout out to Sai, but like he's really like taught me a lot but I've kind of always kind of like learn from everybody
