Summary

In large and small ways, mattering is essential. Self esteem depends on our ability to contribute to the lives around us. You may know Jennifer B. Wallace from her stints on morning television or her journalism in the Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post. She and Kelly discuss her first book: Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic—And What We Can Do About It. Please note: In this episode, Kelly and Jennifer discuss the high cost of having a child see a private neuropsychologist for an evaluation. However, every parent/guardian is legally entitled to refer their child to Special Education.  Schools typically have a procedure in place.  For example: the parent(s) might need to meet with the principal and psychologist to discuss building level interventions. If the parent decides to go through with the referral, the school has 45 school days to complete an evaluation and determine eligibility - if the child has a disability that adversely impacts their learning the child is classified and an IEP is created.  Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) guarantees access to all. So I was at this meeting a year ago at UC Berkeley and I met so many fascinating, hardworking people

1:15.6

who came together to talk about intellectual humility. Everything from the research being

1:21.3

currently done about the benefits of intellectual humility and the people who were popularizing the

1:28.4

information and sharing the science. One of the guests at that retreat was Jennifer Wallace and I

1:35.6

kind of fell in love at first sight and we had such a good time talking to each other. It was an

1:40.5

instant connection and we said let's go for a walk with the next time I'm in New York and sure

1:45.8

enough we did it. Well, 10 walks later we have covered the city and we have covered in depth

1:53.1

this very cool and important concept that Jenny's come up with called mattering and how mattering

1:59.7

affects people's self-esteem and their ability to weather a world that is sending toxic messages

2:07.3

about achievement. Jenny is a longtime journalist. She began her career at 60 minutes on CBS. She's a

frequent contributor to the Wall Street Journal in the Washington Post. She's often on national

when achievement culture becomes toxic and what we can do about it.
