doug brunt before we start our very first episode i want to take one minute to tell you about myself

when i was a kid i read every book i could get my hands on i disappeared for hours in the house

and when i finished a book i'd close the cover and wonder, how could anyone do this? How could someone create a whole world and put it on the page? And I'd imagine what the author was like and what it would be like to have a conversation together. Later, I had a career in business, but in my late 30s, I started writing a novel. I published this novel, then I published

a couple more, and over the years at book festivals and other events, I started to meet some

writers whose work I love, and I got to have those conversations that I used to imagine. And it

turned out, the conversations were even better than I'd hoped for, and each one was so different.

Jennifer Egan, one of our greatest and most important writers. Her debut novel, The

Invisible Circus, was made into a movie of the same name starring Cameron Diaz. She followed that up

with Look at Me, a National Book Award finalist, which got her a ton of buzz at the time. I remember

seeing a profile with Jennifer on Charlie Rose in 2001 when that came out. 2010, already she was a big star, but followed that up

with a visit from the Goon Squad, which won the Pulitzer Prize among many other awards and was the

most talked about novel, not only of that year, but for many years, one of those amazing special

novels that comes along only once in a while, and firmly established Jennifer as one of the all-time
