Summary

Penelope Sitter joins the show to talk about the life and work of the 17th century astrologer Jean-Baptiste Morin de Villefranche, and her new translation of his work. Morin was an astrologer from France who lived around the same time as William Lilly, and he wrote a massive tome on astrology titled Astrologia Gallica, which means French Astrology. Penelope just translated book 21 of Morin’s work from Latin, which is the most important book of Astrologia Gallica, where he outlines his unique approach to chart synthesis. Penelope became so excited about Morin's work after being exposed to it in the 2000's through the work of Robert Corre that she actually learned Latin specifically in order to translate Morin's text. During the course of the episode we talk about Morin's life and work, and then we also get into his techniques and discuss what makes his approach interesting and different when compared to some of his contemporaries. Along the way we talk about his birth chart and personality, and use his chart a few times to demonstrate his technical approach, which he does several times in his work. It ended up being a fascinating discussion, introducing an important but often overlooked astrologer who was the last great court astrologer in France before the decline of astrology in the 17th century. Hey, my name is Chris Brennan, and you're listening to the astrology podcast. In this episode I'm going to be talking with astrologer Penelope Sitter about the life and work of the 17th century astrologer John Baptiste Morin de Villifronge, otherwise known as Morinus.

So Penelope just translated Book 21 of Morin's major work that was written in Latin in the 17th century called the astrology a galica which means French astrology and the title of this new translation is Marin's book 21 of the active determination of the celestial bodies and the passive

Glad to be here, Chris. Yeah, I'm excited to have you.

We're recording this on May 15, 2024, starting at 12.7 PM in Denver, Colorado, and this just came out on May 13th.

0:58.0

So why don't we talk a little bit about Marin's biography and situate him historically first before we get into talking about his astrological text.

1:06.1

So Marin was a French astrologer who lived in the 17th century, right?

1:11.1

Yes. Okay. Born in 1583, died in 1656, and as you mentioned, a near contemporary of Lily born about 19 years before Lily.

1:24.2

Okay, so he's like roughly living at the same time period as William Lily just to give people a reference point.

1:30.4

I just talked about Lily in an episode two episodes ago with Nick Campion and

1:35.2

Patrick Curry so it's interesting then to see another astrologer from a different

1:40.9

country who's you know in Europe and who's participating in

1:44.1

astrology roughly in the same time period but it has a very different background

1:49.0

than Lily did what were some of the things that Marin, what was his background in terms of his academic

training?

2:00.5

He studied, well clearly he studied mathematics, but he got the, received a medical degree in 1615 from Avignon, a university there, and also wrote on astronomy and practiced it and was very interested in cosmology and in an essentially Aristotelian natural philosophy.

And so he was he was a trained as a physician and he worked as a doctor basically for many

eminent people in Europe and in France, including Kings and Queens.

2:45.0

He was also a mathematician.

2:48.0

He was an astronomer, and he's known for some scientific contributions about how to find like longitudes and latitudes at sea, right?

2:58.0

Longitudes specifically. This became a very big issue during the mercantile period and the period of colonialism in Europe.
