This is CBSI in the world. I'm John Dutch with my colleague and friend Gordon Chang, and

0:09.4

we're very pleased to go to Japan. And welcome Yoko Ishi, blogger known as Random Yoko,

0:15.4

to comment on a startling new headline from Japan Kyoto News. Half of unmarried people

0:22.1

under 30 in Japan do not want children. Yoko, a very good even to thank you for this.

0:31.4

These are young people born in the 21st and at the end of the 20th century. What is the

0:37.9

explanation for not wanting children? After all, the reason they're here not wanting children

0:41.9

is that somebody wanted them. How does this happen? Good evening to you. Good evening,

0:47.0

John. Thank you so much for having me back on your amazing show. So there are many layers to

0:53.1

this problem. However, I believe that the biggest problem of this is actually economy. The economy

1:01.0

is bad and people say when they're interviewed by the media, like the TV or the newspaper, they say

1:08.3

that they can't afford to have children. And also they're very anxious about their future.

1:15.0

They have no idea what's going to happen to our society in the near future. And so they don't

1:20.6

want to risk it to have children. And not only children, but they don't want to get married.

1:27.3

And so the more people are getting married later than before. And also there's this interesting

1:34.6

poll about married people. For example, the lifetime I'm married rate in Japan. This is a poll from

1:44.8

2020. And those who have never been married until 50 years old, it's for males, it's 28% and females

1:56.5

17%. And Japan is not like Western countries, especially like Europe. And so people usually have

2:03.2

children when they're married. So if like 28% male and 70% female are not married, then they're not

2:11.9

going to have children. So of course, like, first of all, like we are not getting married. So that's

2:17.9

a huge problem I see. And in the past, Japanese people would just get married when we turn adults.

2:26.2

But today, we are less of that culture. And so like our cultural values have shifted. And it's more

2:35.9

diverse, just like Western developed countries. And also marriage is romanticized. Like back in a day,
