Hello and welcome to today's independent travel podcast with me, Simon Calder.

0:09.3

It's Tuesday the 21st of January.

0:12.3

And there are reports that the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, as well as the Prime Minister,

0:18.9

Sarkir Stama, are very keen on approving expansion projects at three

0:25.1

of London's airports. They are Heathrow, Gatwick and Luton. And the idea is that you'll have

0:34.1

billions of pounds of private sector investment. The government might need to come up

0:39.9

with a bit of cash for local public transport. But basically, this is a very easy win for

landings and takeoffs every 80 seconds or so

1:48.7

and at gowick just around the m25 and down a bit

1:52.2

the busiest single runway airport in the world

1:56.9

has one plane landing and another one taking off every single. It doesn't work. Well, I'm afraid

2:03.1

it gets very messy and over Christmas and the new year. Bad weather caused hundreds of

2:09.2

cancellations affecting tens of thousands of passengers. We could see the same later this week,

2:15.6

predicted high winds. And so if you build more capacity, you should get more resilience.

2:23.3

Now, where exactly are we with airport expansion?
