Last time the two men had reached the big river, the Mississippi, in the summer of 1673.

It was a triumph, but now they had to follow the river, ideally to its outlet and then return home.

Regarding this, our primary source about this expedition is from Father Jacques Marquette.

The man kept a journal, and from that we get a lot of the information we use in this podcast.

Louis Joliad also kept a journal and made detailed maps.

However, Joliad's documentation would be lost on the returned journey.

The loss of his maps and charts was especially disappointing as Joliad was an expert at such things.

Now, Joliad would recount the expedition to another Jesuit priest from memory, but many of the details were lost.

Also, and this is really important, when Marquette's journal was ultimately put together,

some of the things included in it were likely from Joliad's verbal report.
