11 years ago today my second son came home and completed our family and that is Crockett Marcos Berry

And Crockett named after my childhood hero of Davy Crockett, Marcos because that was one of his family

names in Ethiopia and of course Barry which is our family name.

And we got the best news last night.

The coach announced after a week of tryouts

that even though he's only a sophomore

in a very competitive program that he had made varsity as a sophomore

and that was his big dream that was what he's been working for that's what he's been

training for and he made it and I actually prefer to be on junior varsity

where you could be the best player you know the big fish in a small pond

rather than being one of the younger kids on a senior power team soccer

squad but he wanted to be he that was an honor to him he set his goals he accomplished it and I'm proud of him and I'm basically just proud to be his dad I tell my kids all the time and I hope you do too

it is an honor to get to be your father. It is an honor to get to share your life.

It is an honor to get to be the one who guides you and disciplines you and teaches you and learns from your experience.

That doesn't mean I won't swatch your butt.

That doesn't mean I won't send you to bed early.

That doesn't mean you don't get yelled at or punished, but it means that we're on this journey together

and to get to do that is an honor. I consider that an honor. I consider it an honor that you didn't choose but by your very existence

is so much a part of who I am. My wife and I were laying in bed last night and I said

gosh it's only been 11 years and today I turned 53 that that's you

know 20% of my life basically but it feels like my entire life has been being this kid's dad.
