half drunk, laughing too hard or crying too loudly, turning ordinary nights into something that never

fully settled. When the housing lottery

came around again, they aimed for a building that promised fewer residents, fewer disruptions,

and the kind of stillness that made studying and sleeping possible. The new dorm delivered on

that promise immediately. The hallway stayed empty. The stairwells didn't

echo with late-night conversations. Even the air felt difference, cooler, cleaner, as if the building

had never fully learned the habits of student life. That detail made sense once they learned what

the place had been before. It wasn't built as a dorm at all. It had been

an office building, renovated, and repurposed only recently, and it still carried small remnants

of that former identity. The doors were the most obvious example. Each room had a heavy door

with a tinted window in the upper half, the kind of glass meant to let a little light in while still keeping the interior private.
