When she thinks about that house now, she does not remember it as frightening.

She remembers the way the light came in through the kitchen

window in the afternoons. She remembers the hum of the refrigerator and the way the floor

creaked near the base of the stairs. She remembers arguing with her sister about small things

that felt enormous at 11 years old, borrowed shirts, slammed doors who got the better bedroom. The house

itself was unremarkable. A rental in a quiet neighborhood her parents chose because it was

close to work and within budget. They were meant to live there only temporarily. The kind of

in-between place families occupy while waiting for something more permanent.

The furniture was partly theirs, partly left behind by previous tenants.

It never fully felt like home.

She was 11 that summer, old enough to be independent in small ways,

young enough that her world still revolved around her sister. Her sister was three

years older and carried herself with the impatience of someone who had already begun separating

from childhood. They fought often, sometimes loudly. Their parents blamed it on age and proximity.

The first time it happened, she didn't even register it as strange.

She was in the living room sitting cross-legged on the carpet when she saw her sister walk past the doorway toward the kitchen.

It was a quick, ordinary glance, the swing of long hair, the shape of a familiar t-shirt.

A few seconds later, she called out to ask a question.

No answer.
