Rear Admiral Retired Mark Montgomery who is now the senior director of the Center on

Cyber and Technology Innovation at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracy.

Mark, a very good evening to you.

I want to begin in Ukraine because it is the hot ticket, but it's fog of war.

The strike force, the incursion is the polite way to put it, of the Ukrainian elements of its

very good equipment, very good equipment from the photographs I'm looking at,

driving towards Kursk Oblast. They've been in Somioblast and as of yet the Russians have not launched a counter-strike to my information, but it's fog of war.

I've also been told that the size of the Ukrainian strike force is about a

thousand maybe it's larger what in your opinion is the mission what where is

what is the goal of this strike force good evening to you Mark well first

thank you for having me and good to be here and that's a great first question

because I think this is a I don't know that we know the answer I don't know that the

US government knows the answer I don't think we had a lot of forewarning if any about this

But I think what Ukraine's trying to do is twofold one

Demonstrate their ability to take the offense to Russia, demonstrate that ability to the United States

and our European allies who are supporting Ukraine.

And the second and probably bigger reason is to embarrass Vladimir Putin and demonstrate to the Russian people that this

you know Putin's forays into Ukraine are poorly thought out and could create risk for Russia itself. I do think that they're going to have to make a decision pretty soon.
