There is a negotiation underway at some remove from transparency. In any event, we do know that there was an offer made by the US and Israel

to Hamas in some fashion through the interlocutors in Cairo, Egyptian and Qatari.

That's what we're told.

Hamas has answered with a number of amendments

that are regarded as unacceptable. The one that was most surprising to me was that Hamas

is, and this is a language problem, I'm going to say it in English, who knows what the

subtleties are in Arabic.

Hamas is asking for Russia, China, and Turkey

to be guarantors of a ceasefire.

First time I've heard those three,

or any one of them mentioned in these negotiations.

Did that surprise you, Jeff?

He did surprise me, John, and he also asked for the United States separately to be a guarantor.

Perhaps that's some reflection of the recent UN Security Council resolution, which of course, China, United States, and Russia, along with Britain and France, would have had to endorse his permanent members calling on a

mosque to sign that particular ceasefire.

And it also underscores, I think, one of the big differences at the moment.

Israelis offering a temporary ceasefire for six weeks

and negotiations during that period of time which might lead to a permanent ceasefire

and Hamas wanting a permanent ceasefire and into the war now and those guarantees that you mentioned
