Summary

Is the carnivore diet even better than the Keto diet or the Paleo diet? Health Theory always aims to explore every strategy that can improve your health. In this special episode of Health Theory, several leading functional health practitioners weigh the pros and cons of the carnivore diet, and compare it to several other popular diets. Paul Saladino, Ken Berry, Mike Mutzel, Will Cole and Mark Hyman explain how micronutrient-rich meat is, how to start eating a carnivore diet, what an “advanced” version of the carnivore diet looks like, and whether or not the supposed risks of the diet are overblown. Hey guys, welcome to a special edition of Health Theory.

0:03.6

When we started the show, we named it Health Theory because we wanted to explore every strategy

0:08.0

that may improve your health. And if you've watched the show before, you know that to improve your

0:13.2

mindset, you must first start with the body. Now, I've had the opportunity to sit across from some

0:19.6

of the greatest minds in the health space, many of whom have talked at length about the carnivore

0:24.9

diet. So today, I wanted to share with you everything you need to know about the carnivore diet.

0:31.1

Enjoy. What is the carnivore diet? And you need to explain because you're the first person

0:39.0

I've ever heard say, because I'd never dove into the carnivore diet before, but you're the first

0:43.1

person I've ever heard say, no, no, from an evolutionary standpoint, this is probably how we ate.

0:47.1

And so I'd like to know sort of the main things that people throw out that our digestive

0:52.0

track is clearly set up to do both, that our teeth are the teeth of an omnivore, like,

0:56.7

how do you show that that isn't true? There's a lot of nuance there and I think the evolutionary

1:02.0

discussions are always a little bit conjecture. And the whole discussion here is premise on the fact

1:09.0

that what we did in the past is what we should be doing now. And that is debatable as well. I mean,

1:13.6

some people in evolutionary biology would debate how quickly humans can adapt to things. What we do

1:18.8

know is that humans have really only been doing agrarian, that is farming, type societies for about

1:24.6

10 to 12,000 years. This is called the neolithic revolution. But if we back up way further,

1:30.0

we can go back 80,000 years and look at stable nitrogen isotope studies of collagen. So basically,

1:37.6

they look at different types of nitrogen in the bones of Neanderthal and Homo sapiens. And what they

1:43.7

see is so much nitrogen, so the ratio of the nitrogen gives us a sense of what these people were

1:48.8

eating. Because we know that when we eat higher up the food chain, we accumulate more nitrogen.

1:53.3

And what we see is that there is so much nitrogen in those bones that those people were essentially
