Police in Los Angeles say they carried out mass arrests following the introduction of a partial curfew in districts of downtown LA.

The curfew ended just a few minutes ago at 6 a.m. local time.

Protests against President Trump's immigration policies have been continuing,

as has the political row over his decision to deploy Marines and members of California's National Guard.

He says to protect immigration officers trying to detain undocumented migrants.

In a video posted on social media late Tuesday, the governor of

California Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, said the president had inflamed the situation. Donald Trump,

without consulting California law enforcement leaders, commandeered 2,000 of our state's National

Guard members to deploy on our streets illegally and for no reason.

This brazen abuse of power by a sitting president inflamed a combustible situation,

putting our people, our officers, and even our National Guard at risk.

So what was the picture overnight in Los Angeles in the comparatively small part of downtown L.A.

where this curfew applied.

The BBC's John Subworth reports.

So there's a small crowd in the middle of this street, but police on both sides now.

You can see the flashing blue and red lights and that's the baton rounds coming in.

We're standing away to the edge here, just ducking inside a car park.
