Summary

Have you ever been walking across the street when a driver turned into your path and almost hit you? Or riding your bike when a hostile horn-honker laid into you for delaying them to the next red light by a few seconds? If you spend any amount of time on a city’s streets outside of the protective shell of a two-ton automobile, you’ve probably had frustrating, frightening, and infuriating experiences like these. How did you respond? Did you lash out verbally, or give them the finger? Mutter under your breath and walk away? Did you dare lay hands on their precious vehicle? Or did you do the sensible thing and buy a ten-pack of War on Cars stickers to slap up around your neighborhood? In this episode, Doug, Sarah and Aaron share their own experiences of close calls they’ve had with cars, plus strategies for coping. And we hear tips and stories from listeners as well.

This episode is produced with support from Rad Power Bikes.

Okay, so the other weekend I was crossing the street at the top of my block and I was halfway across the street at the top of my block and I was halfway across the street

when this dark-colored luxury SUV took this incredibly aggressive right turn into my path.

0:24.0

Like close enough to basically like scrape my leg, you know, like very close, very aggressive.

0:32.1

And you know that's actually not that unusual but what really got me in this case was the driver was kind of looking me right in the eye as she was doing it. You know we were like locked eyes and it just looked like you know it was just like a

0:44.3

neighborhood mom it was like a mom for my kids school or something just kind of

0:47.9

staring me straight in the eye as she was almost ruthlessly killing me.

0:52.4

Look you made eye contact so you know as she was almost ruthlessly killing me.

0:53.2

Look, you made eye contact, so you know,

0:55.2

that's what they say you're supposed to do.

0:56.8

I guess, but so I was just infuriated by this.

1:00.2

And I just, for whatever, I was just like,

1:01.8

I'm not gonna stand for this one one and so I jogged over to the nearest city bike station

1:06.7

which frankly is not that close to this spot I jumped on a bike and I sped down the street in the general direction that she'd gone.

1:15.2

My plan, if you could call it that being I was going to chase down this black SUV.

1:20.9

Wait, we're talking about like the bike is like a block from where it was like two block two or three blocks.

1:26.6

Okay.

1:27.6

So I mean maybe a slightly inflated vision of just how possible this was.

1:33.6

She could have gone in at least three different directions

1:36.1

from the bottom of my block.

So how was I gonna find this person?
