Summary

In many parts of the U.S., China remains a huge business opportunity despite recent friction. That's the country where Apple makes its phones and Nike stitches its shoes. Yet inside the Washington Beltway, China is a security threat. Full stop. It's one of the few things Democrats, Republicans and most everyone else in the capital agree on.

NPR correspondents Greg Myre and John Ruwitch report on this gap between how China is viewed in Washington policy circles and how many outside the proverbial beltway think about the country.

0:09.1	My grandfather started the store in 1951.
0:12.3	And like many businesses in the US,
0:14.4	Williams relies on products shipped in from China.
0:17.3	I mean, it's just so crazy to think
0:18.9	to when all of it started back in 2018, I guess.
0:21.6	So back in 2018, when then President Trump
0:24.7	announced new tariffs on billions of dollars of Chinese goods,
0:28.6	stores like Williams took a hit.
0:30.8	Just makes it a little harder to sell that really great bag
0:35.1	that, you know, maybe how to price point of $400 back in 2018.
0:40.9	And that bag is probably now gosh, 550,
0:45.4	pushing six in.
0:46.7	It's the same bag, you know,
0:48.4	now, Williams says when you take into account the tariffs,
0:51.4	duties and shipping costs,
0:53.2	there's no other option than to charge more.
0:55.9	We'd like for that product to be at a price the consumer's comfortable pain.
0:59.9	And then, you know, we'd love to see some tariff relief in our industry
1:04.0	just because there is no luggage made in the United States.
