Summary

Nobody knows 10,000 metres quite like the record holder and legend Sonia O’Sullivan. She talks to me today about why this distance can be so tricky to run fast and so much fun to train for. With only a week to go until the Vitality 10,000 in London, a race Sonia has run in the past, we dial in coach Trevor Cummins in Cobh. He explains why we all need to find out where we are with 10K before heading out and trying to run it as fast as possible. Sonia reveals a cheeky little equation you can use to calculate your best time and I have a revelation about why I am tanking in all my long runs! We head around the parishes to see what our listeners have been running, get Sonia’s tip of the week and much more. Training for 10K is a very different beast.

Today on Irishman running abroad, Ireland's best 10,000 meter runner of all time joins me as usual to talk about the approach we should all take to scaling this mountain and getting our 10K time to where we would like it to be. Sonia, great to talk to you again. What's the right headspace to go after a fast 10K, do you think?

0:56.6

Let's start there.

0:58.7

I think, well, the big thing chasing a 10K is, I suppose, knowing where you're at and knowing what's

1:04.2

realistic because the 10K is quite different to the 5K.

1:07.6

The 5K, you can probably get away with it.

1:10.3

You know, you can start out hard,

1:12.9

you can survive a little bit in the middle and then before you know it, the finishes in sight.

1:17.9

The 10K is a bit more in the middle to do it and to get yourself through. And I think I have

1:24.2

actually run this run that you're going to run. It's next Monday, isn't it? That's right.

1:28.0

Vitality 10,000, yeah.

1:30.1

Yeah.

1:30.7

And it's a lovely setting, you know, down the mall.

1:33.8

And it's predominantly a flat course.

1:36.7

London is pretty flat town.

1:39.5

And the roads are pretty good in London at the moment.

1:42.4
