The government has been tolerated by Iranians, but has never been really popular.

But what's different now, I think, is a lot of people have given up hope, partly because

of the US sanctions, which have been so crippling, and partly because of the repressive forces

in their own government, which they see as being strengthened by US sanctions.

I think the Iranian showed what they called strategic patience for a year after the US

withdrew, and it was only when Mike Pompeo, the Secretary of State, said that Iran could

not export one drop of its oil, that we saw them shift from patience to resistance,

They say that if they can't export oil, then others should not be able to as well.
