Summary

In this episode, we talk about the iPC project with Matteo Manica. He's a research staff member at the IBM Research Lab in Europe at the Zurich location. He describes his role and some of the overarching goals of this four year project. From tumour and drug modeling efforts to artificial intelligence, iPC aims to reduce suffering and maintain a high quality of life for children suffering with cancer.

The iPC project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 826121

Welcome to the EUvation podcast. I'm Peter Balland from Technicon. Today we once again look at the

0:26.1

IPC project. IPC stands for individualized pediatric cure. This is a huge EU-funded effort to

0:35.0

assist doctors in finding the most effective treatment for children with

0:38.8

tumors. There is no one-size-fits-all approach, and doctors, clinicians, oncologists,

0:45.3

biomedical engineers, and computer scientists are working together in IPC to use data, human samples,

0:51.8

and artificial intelligence to tailor treatments for kids while

minimizing the risks. It's no easy task, but IPC is making inroads in this area. Today we speak

with Mateo Monica from project partner IBM. He's a research staff member at the IBM Research Lab

in Europe at the Zurich location. In the wake of the COVID-19 restrictions, we speak with Matteo remotely from his home office in Zurich.

Welcome to the show and tell us about IPC and your specific role in the project.

1:23.6

IPC is a European project about the development of precise and precision medicine solution

for pediatric tumors.

1:34.3

The main motivation behind this project is that these type of tumors are quite rare, but when they

1:41.3

happens, usually we don't have effective or efficient treatments to handle this type of tumors.

1:48.0

We obviously focus on curing the disease and ensuring the survival of the patient,

1:54.0

but a lot of the treatment options that we have might have extremely negative side effects on the long term.

2:03.6

So we might put the patient through a life and long-term serious health consequences.

2:10.6

So the main reason behind working on these specific tumors in IPC is to try to optimize and find better

therapists that might work as well as current therapies are doing but the idea is

that we might try to tailor them on the specific patient in order to have a better
