Hey, it's Taylor Quimby, and I know it has been a long time since we've dropped anything down this feed, but I am doing it right now because I'm here to introduce you to a new podcast.

It comes from my colleagues at NHPR's document document team, our public radio station's long-form narrative documentary unit.

These are the folks who put out the 13th step, which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize this year.

Their new series is called the Youth Development Center,

and it's hosted by Jason Moon, who I had the privilege of working with on Bear Brook.

And yes, I realize at this point I'm just dropping podcast names, but if you've listened you understand why.

In the Youth Development Center, Jason digs into what is arguably the biggest government scandal in New Hampshire history. In fact, it's ballooned into one of the biggest scandals of its

kind in America, and yet it has gotten very little national attention. This scandal involves decades of abuse at the state's juvenile jail.

And I don't want to sugarcoat this, so I'll just say, this is one of the most upsetting,

enraging, and important series I have ever listened to.

It's also graphic and it's not for kids.

But if you appreciate excellent accountability reporting and powerful storytelling, this series is for you.

So this is episode one, the black box.

Andy Perkins wanted to get it right to keep all the memories straight. So we wrote it down.

In three word documents, Andy typed out a personal history of his time at a place called

YDC, the Youth Development Center. Andy had just reached out to some lawyers, and he figured it would be important to get all the stories together in one place.

I'm worried I didn't put something in that would be needed.
