Sometimes I imagine human knowledge is a huge convoluted membrane floating in space.

0:10.0

And on one side is what we know, the whole of human scientific inquiry, and on the other,

0:16.3

the vast unknown, and in some cases the completely unknowable.

0:20.4

Over time, that membrane grows in all sorts

0:22.4

of weird ways, and that's where we, at Quantum Magazine, come in. I'm Samir Patel, the editor-in-chief.

At Quanta, we report from this frontier to bring you a greater understanding of the latest

0:34.6

advances in basic or fundamental science and math from astrophysics and quantum

0:39.9

computing to molecular biology and classic unsolved math problems. Quanta's been doing this for more

0:46.2

than a decade across thousands of stories and videos, and yes, podcasts. We have the quantum

0:51.8

science podcast, which has translated many of our stories into

0:54.8

audio form and The Joy of Why, where mathematicians Steven Strogatz and astrophysicist Jan

1:12.1

to offer another perspective on physics, math, biology, and computer science.

1:18.2

here. Those are audio edition episodes, stories that we have on our site, and we're to continue to do them as audio edition episodes running every two weeks.

I've been a science journalist for about 20 years. I've worked at magazines and websites.

1:41.1

And one of the first things I noticed when I started as Quanta's second editor-in-chief

1:45.0

was just how inspirational, dedicated, interesting, and eloquent our staff is when they talk about

1:51.4

the subjects that they cover. This podcast is really inspired by the conversations we've had,

1:57.1

in meetings over coffee, at happy hour. For me, it adds a whole new dimension to our work, and I want to share some of that

2:03.6

energy with you each week.
