I thought you might like a quick primer for our next historical chapter.

Fifteen hundred years after our story began, we enter the third phase, quote unquote,

of Egyptian political development.

We began our tale in 3,000 b.C. with the first known rulers of a united land.

We saw the rise and then fall of the pyramid age, often called the old

kingdom. The time when mighty structures rose to dominate the horizon and people of all walks of life

explored their world, developed their arts and built things

never seen before on the face of the earth.

Following that and a brief period of civil war, we witnessed

nearly 500 years of political and cultural achievement as the rulers of the middle Kingdom brought stability to the realm, expanded

their military power, and oversaw a great flourishing of artistic, literary and philosophical growth. The Middle Kingdom may be forgotten by many, but it is an absolute peak of Egyptian cultural expression. I am sad to see it go. We have experienced a great deal, but what follows is going to be equally remarkable.

We are now entering the phase known historically as the new kingdom.

This is the age in which Egyptians would achieve some of their most famous deeds,

conquering vast swaves of the near east, exploring new religious ideas,
