Summary

The latest season of the wildly popular con-themed podcast Chameleon takes place in the summer of 2003 when two half-starved young men turned up in a small Canadian town telling an incredible story. They’d been raised in the British Columbia wilderness, and this was their first-ever contact with society — they’d never seen a TV, gone to school, or registered for IDs. So the community took them in and set about introducing them to the modern world. Before long, the international media descended on the town, enthralled by the mysterious “Bush Boys.” There was just one problem: not a word the boys said was true. Nearly 20 years later, award-winning comedian and journalist Sam Mullins uncovers the bizarre true story of the strangers who turned his hometown upside-down. Learn more about your ad choices. The Wildly Popular Conthemed Podcast is back. The new season is called Wild Boys and

is hosted by journalist Sam Mullins. It focuses on the story of two teenagers who had turned

up in a small Canadian town and claimed to be raised in the wilderness of British Columbia,

0:17.4

and that they'd never seen a TV, gone to school, or even registered for ideas. But they

were lying. Now, more than 20 years later, Sam Mullins

0:26.8

uncovers the bizarre true story of the strangers who turned his hometown upside down. It's a

0:32.5

psychological drama you won't want to miss with never-before-heard audio from the boys

and their family. Check out this clip here.

The boys couldn't have known it, but they showed up in the right place at the right time.

Because in a sense, this only could have happened in Vernon, because it's like, we didn't

even have the infrastructure in place for an interesting thing to happen. You need to know

about my hometown. Vernon is located in the Okanagan, a region in the interior of British

Columbia, sort of halfway between Vancouver and Calgary. Historically, it's been a middle-class

1:10.4

place, but the whole region has sort of been transformed into an outdoor playground for the

1:15.6

wealthy. The Okanagan is known for its wineries, golf courses, mountain ski resorts, its lakes,

1:23.5

and the mythological beast, the Ogopogo, who lives in one of set lakes, allegedly.

1:30.3

The crown jewel of Vernon, and in my opinion, the whole Okanagan is Kalamalko Lake.

So, Kalake is home to Cal Beach, and it's the beach in a town filled with beaches.

1:42.4

And right across the street from the beach is the Hallowed Cal General Store.

I think sort of a fulxier version of the 7-Eleven. If I could distill the vibe of Kalstor down into a

single transaction, it would be a teenager in a bathing suit, buying a slushie, and then paying

with a wet $5 bill. And then when the cashier's back is turned, they steal a lighter, that kind of
