Summary

"Retirement Plan" is a 2024 Irish animated short film directed by John Kelly and co-written by John Kelly and Tara Lawall. It is Kelly's debut film. The 7-minute animated film about the fantasies of a middle-aged man has received positive reviews and been awarded at various international film festivals, including Palm Springs International ShortFest and SXSW. The film's style, described as expressively understated, subdued, and stripped back, was animated using MoHo animation software. It has been nominated for Best Animated Short Film at the 98th Academy Awards. Kelly was kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about his experience and work on the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now available to stream on YouTube through The New Yorker and is up for your consideration for this year's Academy Awards. Thank you, and enjoy! We have to start with the congratulations for that. Were you watching the nominations or did you

1:16.9

try to like shut it out? Yeah, it's a weird thing, isn't it? I know previous years, I think

Screen Ireland, who funded our film, have arranged events where everyone gets

1:28.5

in a cinema together and watches it, which is like my worst nightmare. You know, because if you

1:35.2

don't get it, obviously, it's like you've brought all these people out and taken all their time.

1:40.4

And our crew was quite spread out. So, yeah, Zoom was really the only option. We didn't have

1:47.6

massively high hopes for it. It was a bit of an outsider film in a very strong year of animated

shorts, like the shortlist was incredible. And I think you probably know there's a few that were

1:58.2

just certainties to get in and then suddenly didn't.

2:01.6

But I know it's very unpredictable. This is a very long answer.

2:04.6

But yes, no, I think I was there with my wife and yeah, we had lovely little celebrations.

The LiveLine, which is the kind of national radio drive time show here in Ireland, rang.

2:22.1

And that's like got the biggest listenership.

2:24.7

It's kind of an institution here.

2:26.2

And that was actually ringing just after they announced.

2:29.1

So somehow they'd found my number.
