They chat about finding inspiration for games, developing for unique hardware, and balancing multi-modal challenges. Mattia also gives a detailed history of developing a Kinect game at a time when Microsoft was just about ready to pull the plug on the peripheral. Hello and welcome to the Canon Rinse podcast. Today we have a special interview with one of the

0:24.4

designers of one of last year's most interesting and maybe underappreciated games. We'll get to that

0:32.0

in the moment here. We have in the studio now, Matia Traverso, is that the correct way to pronounce the last name there?

0:40.2

That's perfect. I mean, I've heard much worse, so this is fantastic.

0:45.6

All right, and you are with Thru Games.

0:49.2

Exactly, yes.

0:50.0

And you just last year put out a really interesting, I would describe it as a puzzle platformer called Frue.

0:58.5

Exactly. Actually, we really like the pun that the name of the game is Thru, but the name of the studio is Thru, which I have a hard time pronouncing.

1:07.5

I actually did it to trick my fellow Italians. I knew that they wouldn't be

1:11.5

able to distinguish the difference. That actually caused us some problem with people

1:15.3

were trying to send us emails, but that's another story. Let's give a little bit of an introduction

1:19.8

to you. You say that in the little green room chat that we had before recording, you said

1:25.7

that you have lived in Italy for the past

1:28.2

year. Where were you before that? Right. So I'm actually from Italy, but I've moved to the

1:34.0

Netherlands four to five years ago. I actually went there to study. I had my degree in game design.

1:41.4

I was an independent developer before then, and I made flash games. One of

1:46.4

them is called One and One Story, and it's another puzzle platformer. I guess I'm cursed to only

1:52.5

make puzzle platformers. It's not a bad curse to have, though. I guess, but we'll see for the next

1:58.7

game. But besides, it's basically a puzzle platformer about a relationship,

2:04.0

and the mechanics of the game will change depending on the story of this relationship

2:07.8

between this boy and this girl.

2:09.6

Interesting.
